Prayershift, Birmingham – Saturday 12th Oct.

Are you in the Birmingham area this Saturday? Our friends at World Prayer Centre invite you to join for prayer:

Prayer Shift 12 Oct 2019

We invite you to come to the next Prayershift gathering at Betel centre, Sherlock Street on Saturday 12 October from 10.30 am.  We have a special focus – the Gospel. We are the prayer support for Advance 2020 taking place the same day, equipping 1500 evangelists and praying for a fresh move of God in our nation.  We will also be praying for the nation as Brexit approaches.  We look forward to seeing you there!

On Wednesday 2nd October, we invited a number of prayer leaders together from Birmingham to share the vision for the house of prayer for Birmingham.  It was an amazing time together and there was an excitement for what God is doing in our city. We will now look to follow up with them as to how we can work together to raise a canopy of prayer over the city of Birmingham.  It was felt that coming together in prayer will be a catalyst for unity in Birmingham.  Pray for God to guide us in the next steps of the Birmingham house of prayer and for him to bring the people who have a passion for prayer for Birmingham.

Here’s a powerful story of forgiveness that has been in the news.  Ex-Cop Amber Guyger shot her neighbour Botham Jean when she entered his apartment claiming she mistook it for her own. She thought she had come across an intruder. Her victim was a PWC accountant but also a youth pastor and worship leader.  In court, her victim’s brother forgives her – in a powerful example of how forgiveness sets us free. He said “I’m not gonna say anything else. I think giving your life to Christ will be the best thing that Botham would want you to do. Again, I love you as a person. I don’t wish anything bad on you.  “I don’t know if this is possible, but can I give her a hug?”  Watch the video here.

Pray – World Mental health Day – 10th October

World-Mental-Health-Day-Logo-Picture-800x600Our friends at World Prayer Centre have reminded us of this day for prayer on Thursday this week:

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY – 10 OCTOBER

One in four adults in the UK is likely to have a mental health problem at some stage in their lifetime. Anxiety, which involves unease, worry or fear affects 5% of the population at any one time. About 20% of people will suffer from depression at some stage in their lifetime. People are often reluctant to share mental health issues with others, afraid that the response will be unsympathetic. We long to see a time when people will feel free to ask for prayer, with confidence that the prayer response would be compassionate and wise.

At its extreme, mental health issues feed the suicide rate. There were 11.2 deaths from suicide per 100,000 people. The most vulnerable were men in their late 40’s, but there is a rise in young men aged 20 – 24 and young girls and women from 10 – 24.

Pray:

  • For the church to accept, love and support people with mental health issues.
  • For family and friends of people who have committed suicide in 2019.
  • For God’s protection on people considering suicide – may they be rescued.

Passion for the Nation – Declarations to Change a Nation

Passion for the Nation flag logo

About 2016, I found myself at the World Prayer Centre Trumpet Call event in Birmingham and sitting next to a lady I had not met before, Suzanne Ferrett. It was during the meeting that I discovered that she was the founder an organisation called Passion for the Nation, the purpose of which was to establish God’s Kingdom purposes for the nation through prayer, declaration and decree. This very much sparked my interest!

Suzanne Ferrett

I later contacted Suzanne and a number of weeks later, we both travelled from our homes, which were miles apart, in opposite directions around the M25, and met halfway between at a roadside Starbucks. We exchanged our stories and left, unclear what God might have for us both together in the future. But in my mind at least, certain that Call the Nation to Prayer and Passion for the Nation, were all about the same thing – seeing The Kingdom of Heaven come to the United Kingdom!

In 2017, Suzanne joined The Team of Call the Nation to Prayer and was very involved in the planning and taking part, making Declarations over the UK, at our 2018, ‘As One’ event in Coventry and nearby Meriden. Read what Suzanne declared on the day, click here to view them on a pdf document.

Declarations to change a nation booklet

Suzanne’s passion is to equip the Church to transform the nation. She has authored several booklets of transformative Declarations – click here to go to her online shop.

Suzanne continues to write regular Declarations over the UK, which are in tune with unfolding events in the nation and open for anyone to use.

Prepare

Network for Revival September 2019

I am currently dealing with three major foundations for prayer for Revival. In the last issue I dealt with Praying in holiness (http://networkforrevival.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Prepare-13-August-2019.pdf). In this issue I deal with Praying in faith. In the next issue I plan to deal with In-depth Intercession. The Lord has taught me so much since I have been praying for Revival and I want to share it with you. I’m sure he has a lot more to teach me later but I’m concentrating on these three for the time being.

How to pray for Revival: Pray in faith

Let me admit to begin with that, although I have been a believer for decades, and have experienced innumerable blessings from the Lord, nevertheless I have had a natural tendency towards rationalism. Often, I think I’ve hoped that God will answer my prayers, rather than strongly believed he will. In the last four years, since I’ve been seriously praying for revival, God has put me through a crash course in what faith really is. This has transformed my attitude. I say this to encourage you, because I’m going to write some challenging things. What I want to say is that if God can do this for me, he can do it for anyone! So please resist discouragement.

Remember what the writer to the Hebrews says about faith in Heb 11:1 (I prefer the older NIV translation) “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” The NIV Application Commentary, referring to the Greek, states that this verse means “Faith is a ‘resolute confidence’ in what we hope for and a ‘vital certainty’ about what we do not see.”

How do we reach that sort of faith? I want to share just two things we need to remember about faith.

Faith is a relationship of trust

Growing in faith is not trying to ‘work up’ our faith, or trying to make ourselves believe. It is focusing on God. Faith is fellowship. To grow in faith we need to concentrate, prayerfully, on the character of God. We need to remember that he is love. He always acts, and reacts, in love. He cannot do otherwise because he is love. It follows that he is utterly faithful and reliable. This means that if he says he will do something we can utterly rely on him doing so. He cannot fail. The idea that faith is fellowship is a very simple, and yet, very profound thought. To meditate on the love and faithfulness of God is life-transforming. It greatly strengthens our faith.

Faith is taking God’s promises seriously

I have known these promises for many, many years but it is only recently that it has really dawned on me how utterly amazing they are. As I have meditated on them I have become much more confident in prayer, much bolder in expecting God to answer prayer. I believe God is waiting for people who will really take his promises to answer prayer seriously, not toning them down. He has committed himself to answer our prayers if we are fulfilling the simple conditions. He has put his promises in writing. Here are the amazing promises from the lips of Jesus himself:

“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer” (Mt 21:22).
“Everything is possible to the one who believes” (Mk 9:23).
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you receive it and it will be yours (Mk 11:24).
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who
asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Mt 7:7).
“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my
Father in heaven” (Mt 18:19).
“You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (Jn 14:14).
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (Jn 15:7).

The conditions are clear

  • We need to “remain” in Christ and to ensure his words “remain” in us (so that we discern the will of God).
  • We need to pray in the name of Jesus
  • We need to agree in prayer with another believer
  • We need to persist in prayer (asking, seeking, knocking).
  • We need to believe we receive the answer before we see it physically.

Meditating prayerfully at length on the love and faithfulness of God and on his amazing promises to answer prayer will profoundly strengthen our faith – including for revival. Let’s do it!

Quotations about Revival

When he arrived in Lewis, Duncan Campbell was asked to speak at an evening meeting in Barvas church. He wrote about what happened: “We got to the church about quarter to nine to find about 300 people gathered. I would say about 300 people. And I gave an address. Nothing really happened during the service. It was a good meeting. A sense of God, a consciousness of His Spirit moving but nothing beyond that. So I pronounced the benediction and we were leaving the church I would say about a quarter to eleven.

Just as I am walking down the aisle, along with this young deacon who read the Psalm in the barn, he suddenly stood in the aisle and looking up to the heavens he said, “God, You can’t fail us. God, You can’t fail us. You promised to pour water on the thirsty and floods upon the dry ground-God, You can’t fail us!”

Soon he is on his knees in the aisle and he is still praying … Just then the door opened–it is now eleven o’clock. The door of the church opens and the local blacksmith comes back into the church and says, “Mr. Campbell, something wonderful has happened. Oh, we were praying that God would pour water on the thirsty and floods upon the dry ground and listen, He’s done it! He’s done it!”

When I went to the door of the church I saw a congregation of approximately 600 people. Six hundred people–where had they come from? What had happened? I believe that that very night God swept in Pentecostal power-the power of the Holy Ghost. And what happened in the early days of the apostles was happening now in the parish of Barvas.”

That young deacon was taking God’s faithfulness and amazing promises very seriously.

Lord, inspire our faith by your love and faithfulness and help us to take your promises to answer prayer (including for revival) with full seriousness.

God bless you

Tony

UK Coastal Prayer Chain – the most Beautiful sunny, warm day!

UK Costline Prayer Chain - frontWe previously helped to promote a vision for a UK Coastal Prayer Chain, by Chelmsford Christian, Jen Gaskin, to take place on Saturday 21st September 2019 – click here for what we said.

Well, it has happened, and here is Jen’s write up from the day.

If you took part, do add your experience and thoughts to this article in the Leave a Reply box at the bottom of this page.

UK Coastal Prayer ChaIn 210919 1

Saturday 21st finally arrived and was the most beautiful sunny warm day. Perfect for a UK Prayer Chain.
.
I cannot give any guess as to how many joined in, we put red dots on a map when people informed us where they would be standing and the South Coast was particularly well covered. Orkney Island was another good area and even the Shetland Isle had red dot or 2!  We have had some good feed back which has been so encouraging and exciting. I will now include a few of  these.
.
‘Folk from Shoeburyness, Essex, opened their Church and served free tea and coffee afterwards.’
‘We took flags and sang These are the Days of Elijah, blew shofars, read a prayer and had open prayer. It was a really good Holy Spirit moment.’
‘Well done for hearing God. It was certainly a God moment.’
‘We have started your Prayer chain tonight in Parliament. I felt it was significant that we were praying from Parliament Square. That life was being prayed throughout the body of the UK as a nation.’;
.
These are just a snippet. The full text from Parliament was very encouraging.
.
As we started to say the Lord`s Prayer at midday it felt very emotional, tearful even.  I, and others have said they felt the same.
.
We had reached the moment that God had led us to and were obediently and reverentially speaking out the Lord`s Prayer across the land and its people. What an awesome moment it was.
.
As I contacted different ministries I was left amazed at how many prayer meetings and conferences were happening on the 21st September, BUT many agreed to stop at midday and join with us in prayer even though they could not be on the coast.
.
I am acutely aware that without the help of many individuals, prayer groups, churches, Christian newspapers and radio stations, this mission could not have happened. God has, as always been faithful and doors have opened, often so exciting that I had to ring a friend and share what GOD had done on quite a few occasions.
.
I am so thankful to God for leading me, for being there every step of the way  and sincerely grateful to every person who has stood with me and believed that this was Gods will.
.
I was also sent a video which was an explanation of the Jewish year and its meaning.
.
‘Because of the partial eclipse in January it meant that there would be a birthing 9 months later which would take place on the 20/21 September’!

Pray during Prisons Week – 13 to 19 October

We encourage you to get involved in praying during next month’s Prisons Week.

More information and to download prayers you can use each day during the week – click here

‘He sets his people free. He made his agreement everlasting. He is holy and wonderful.’ Psalm 111:9 (NCV)

God’s will and intention for all his people is freedom – the freedom to be the people he created them to be. As Prison Chaplains we work with people who often find it hard to believe that God has any interest in them or their lives. They struggle with the concept that they are made in the image of God and do not dare to hope that they may have a future in God which does not involve crime, arrest and imprisonment. In the same way, those whose lives have been marred by crime and its effects, or whose work brings them into daily contact with its destructiveness, often struggle to see a new future in which the promise of freedom in Christ might be fulfilled.

This Prisons Week we give thanks that the freedom which God offers is available to all, even to those whose liberty has been temporarily or permanently taken away by society. As we pray together for all those who come into contact with the criminal justice system in any way, we share in that work of establishing God’s covenant of redemption – that each person, precious to God, might discover what freedom can truly mean for them.

The Ven. James Ridge, Chaplain General/Head of Faith Services, Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service
